The Joy of Spring... Cleaning!

The first signs of spring bring the promise of a fresh start. Happy flowers popping up to say hello, the feeling of being sun-kissed on a warm day or the smell of freshly cut grass always give me a renewed sense of being. And what is the mention of spring in this blog without the discussion of spring cleaning?

As I delve into research in an attempt to uncover some fun new ways to incorporate this task for my clients, I thought I would share some of them with you. These were compiled from Martha Stewart, the Washington Post & some of my own ideas:

  • Find a couple of large boxes & label them: “Donate” and “Repair” – As you’re going through your house, toss things in right on the spot.
  • Empty your closet of winter clothes and store them away for Fall – Anything that doesn’t fit properly or is in disrepair, toss into those boxes.
  • Flip and disinfect your mattresses with Lysol spray to kill all of those winter germs.
  • Launder your pillows every 3 months (read your tags), or if not recommended, spot clean with sudsy warm water & baking soda then air dry.
  • Replace your old shower liners, or give them a good scrubbing with a solution of 10 parts water & 1 part chlorine bleach with a plastic-bristled brush.
  • Consider renting a carpet cleaner to hit those ugly stains on the stairs and entryways - These are very reasonable to rent & you will be amazed by how new your carpet will look when it’s clean.
  • Get your family into the habit of closing the toilet lids when flushing – Did you know when toilets are flushed, moisture and bacteria are released into the air? By closing the lid, you will reduce household mold and mildew from developing in the bathroom.
  • Disinfect your dishwasher by using baking soda or white vinegar – Measure out one cup, and throw into the bottom of your dishwasher. Run a short cycle on hot and notice the difference in the smell.
  • Run white vinegar through your coffee maker or French press – let it sit and steam for a while and the stains should lift right off. For stubborn stains, scrub gently with baking soda & pour a little vinegar over it – this will create an impressive bubbling foam.
  • Clean up grout with a little Spray N’ Wash – It’s not a cure all, but great for a quick fix.
  • Sprinkle baby powder on a mildewy floor overnight – Sweep it up and mop over the next day.
  • Designate a Cleaning Closet – Consolidate all of those bottles and take back your space.
  • Convert from using furniture polish and change over to a feather duster – You will save time, money & the environment.
  • Use socks which have lost their mates to polish furniture or to wash the car.
  • Buy a wax furniture crayon in a few popular colors to fill in any chipped paint or scuffs on wood.
  • Rub out marks from your leather furniture with a pencil eraser.
  • Test your smoke alarms & replace the batteries.
  • Buy new filters for your air conditioner
  • Check the glove compartment of your car to make sure your insurance & registration are up to date.
  • To avoid stress, create a file specifically for next year’s taxes – Label it’2010 Taxes’ and throw any receipts or documents in there throughout the year.
  • Defragment & back up your computers.
  • Remember that summer is coming - Clean & repair your patio furniture / locate all summer sports and swimming equipment.

A Time For Love

There comes a time in everyone's life when they stumble upon a cross-road and must choose what path they must take.

I have been approaching many of these decisions in the last couple of years - whether to close my shop, move back to California, pursue entrepreneurship versus a steady career, and a new look at spirituality.  But nothing could have prepared me for the decision I had to make with my own father.

I have recently spent two weeks with him.  Nursing him back to health, making difficult decisions, and having some very real discussions about mortality.  Humbling, fearsome, real...  nothing is forever, and this has proved to be a time to drop everything for love.  He is stronger now - getting healthier every day.  After his rehabilitation and physical therapy, he will be relocating down to Southern California near me.

In a time of uncertainty in this world, when you take it all away, all you really have is yourself, your family and God.  Now is the time to cherish the moments we have to the fullest and truly love.  Thank you all for your care and concern - I hope to be able to jump back into my Consulting and Writing as soon as this all gets settled.

I'll be putting up some previous articles on Spring cleaning.  Tell me...  how is your spring coming along so far?

Thinking Other Moms’ Homes are Neater Than Yours

~ Guest Post  ~
By Jennifer Tankersly

Do you ever visit other moms’ homes and wonder how they keep it so neat? Do you ever sit around in your own home with toys strewn over the floor, laundry piles (both clean and dirty) beckoning for attention, and three meals worth of dishes stacked next to the sink and wonder why you are the only mom on the planet who cannot keep up with her home? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you may be suffering from “TOMHANTY” Syndrome (Thinking Other Moms’ Homes Are Neater Than Yours). The symptoms of this terrible disease are guilt, envy, stress, and even withdrawal (did I mention guilt?).

You look around as you walk from room to room wondering how it could have gotten so messy since yesterday. You believe that the new friend you just made from your weekly visit to the library could never let her house look like a tornado just went through it. You are sure that your friend whose house you visit occasionally for a scheduled playgroup would never have dust bunnies the size of . . .well, a bunny.

Welcome to the Real Moms Club, where it is not just about being a mom, but being real and knowing that you don’t have to be a perfect housekeeper. Maybe in the days of our grandmothers when society said that kids could roam unsupervised and free around town, but a mom’s house was a reflection of who she was as a woman.

Today, there is a different set of priorities for many moms, and a perfect house is not usually the highest on the list, although we still imagine we are being judged on everything from how we raise our children to how much education we pursue to how great a job we land and finally to how tidy we keep house. Moms of today are stretched and pulled in many directions. Life is rarely as simple as a clean house. Stop telling yourself that you are not a good mom because your house is not always as neat as you think other moms’ homes are. Most moms are struggling to keep up as well. What is the cure to TOMHANTY Syndrome, you ask?

Well, you could drop by a friend’s house unannounced with the pretext of delivering some home-baked cookies; you could watch her face turn beet red with shame as she turns to survey the wreck of toys, laundry, and dishes behind her; you could listen to her offer up every reason why her house is in such disarray; or maybe you could just take me at my word when I say that you are not alone.  Release your guilt by making a list of what you DID accomplish today: got kids dressed, dropped kids off at school and picked kids up after, washed and folded a load of laundry, paid bills, took dog to vet, fed family for the day. It all counts toward making your house a home in which your family can grow and feel loved.
